Fatal Crash: Police ID Fitchburg Man, 76, Killed While Crossing Street

Authorities have released the name of the 76-year-old man killed on Friday night, May 19, who was killed after a car crashed into him as he crossed a Fitchburg street. 

Mario Bratkon was crossing Water Street at the intersection of Nichol Street on Friday night, May 19, when he was struck and killed. The four-way stop is at the border between Fitchburg and Leominster.

Mario Bratkon, of Fitchburg, was struck in the crosswalk of Water Street around 8:45 p.m., the Worcester County District Attorney's Office said. Paramedics airlifted him to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, where doctors pronounced him dead. 

The driver of the Toyota Corolla that crashed into him remained at the scene and spoke with police. Prosecutors have not filed any charges in the case, and authorities have not released the driver's name. 

The driver was not injured. 

Fitchburg, Leominster, and Massachusetts State police are investigating the crash.
